History of St. Francis and Cheyenne County
Cheyenne County was organized in the 1880's to aid ranchers who could no longer let their cattle roam on the free range. Bird City was quickly established and based upon cattle herding. As the railroad was being planned to go through Wano, the temporary county seat, land prospectors bought land in strategic areas close to the route. The companies then wanted all the land that Wano encompassed and offered to build a new city one and one half miles away with a train station. This new town was named St. Francis and voted to be the county seat of Cheyenne County. On June 3, 1903, the city of St. Francis was incorporated.
